NDC Plotting To kill Konadu Rawlings(read more)

The former first lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has become a target of political assassination in the country, aides of the National Democratic Party (NDP) have said. According to the Director of Operations of NDP, Joseph Bediako, the former first lady has been trailed on separate ocassions by some two men who possessed lethal weapons. He said their behavior betrayed their intention which he said was to get the former first lady killed. Addressing the issue at a news conference on April 20, Mr. Bediako said the first man came to the residence of the former first lady asking to see her because he has a “special message to be delivered to her”. He said upon several interrogations by a security detail of Mrs. Rawlings, the man said he has been sent from the echelons of power. He was later walked out of the house. The second incident also took place after another gentleman by name Roger entered the Rawlings’ residence saying he wanted to congratulate the former first lady because he heard she has been appointed the vice-president of Ghana. What the gentleman said got them baffled because nothing of that had happened. Mr. Bediako said some of the security officials of Mrs. Rawlings saw the man dropping his gun into his car when he left the residence. He said he was driving a VW car which had no number plate. Speaking on the Joy FM’s Top Story, an aide of the former first lady, Owusu Bempah said Mrs. Rawlings is being targeted for assassination. He disclosed the two men have “consistently been lurking around the former first lady”. Providing some description of the second man known as Roger, Mr. Bempah said he had spotted the man a few times wearing a “jacket some two to three weeks ago”. On his part, Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), DSP Cephas Arthur said it was to avoid some of these issues that the police administration took the decision to provide security for presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the various political parties in the country ahead of the November 2016 polls. He, however, expressed worry because, since the Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor met heads of political parties to tell them about the decision of the police administration, none of them has come forward to access the “facility”. He called on political parties to access the facility adding they have only up to May 15 to do so.
