The
Ghana Police Service will be providing protection for flagbearers of
the various political parties in the country ahead of the November
polls, Director of Public Affairs with the Police administration, DSP
Cephas Arthur has disclosed.
He said this arrangement is in line
with the Service’s commitment to beef up security around the various
flagbearers prior to the election.
According to a Ghana Police Service statement, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor met the representatives of political parties to consider providing protection for their leaders.
The
IGP used the opportunity to pledge to the representatives the agenda of
the Service to deploy about four police personnel to each of their
presidential candidates and running mates.
However, DSP Arthur
has noted the leadership of the Service does not want to impose security
detail on the flagbearers and their running mates arguing the political
parties have the opportunity to make their choice of security officers.
“It is a matter of somebody’s private security and we don’t want to give somebody he does not trust”, he said.
He
said the Police made similar arrangement for flagbearers of the
political parties in the 2012 general election arguing this is nothing
new. |
